Tenant Information
As a participant in the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program, the family has an obligation to supply complete and accurate information regarding their household. Any changes in income, assets and household composition must be reported within 10 days of its occurrence.
Family members listed on the application are to be the sole occupants. If you want to add any additional person(s) you must obtain advance written permission from the Owner and the Terre Haute Housing Authority. Any background checks and approval will need to be completed to verify their eligibility before adding them to the household.
The family must not participate in any illegal drugs or violent criminal activity.
When choosing a unit keep in mind that if you are responsible for utilities, the Head of Household must be able to get them on in their name. Please check with the utilities in regards to deposits and fees to have utilities turned on prior to signing a lease. If you are not able to get utilities turned on, you need to look for units that utilities are included in the rent. Check the local newspaper and contact real estate agencies that may manage rental property. A Landlord listing of available properties is available on the left.
Once a family has entered into a lease the initial period is one year. Ninety (90) days prior to the end of the lease, the family will be required to recertify their Housing. If the family chooses to remain in the same unit, an annual inspection is conducted. If a family chooses to move to a new unit, the RTA will be completed for the new unit, rent reasonable and affordability will be determined before an inspection is schedule. Do not move in until the unit has been approved.
The family must notify the Housing Authority and Owner with a 30-day written notice of intent to move or to voluntarily withdraw from the Section 8 Program.
Notice of Portability
Portability is the ability of a family to move from one Housing Authority’s jurisdiction to another location. A Section 8 participant can transfer anywhere in the United States that is administering a tenant-based program as long as sufficient funding is available either with the initial or receiving PHA.
